Why the same points give different positions in Europe's big five

Trofeo·

Level on points, goal difference decides it - except in LaLiga and Serie A, where the head-to-head record between the tied clubs comes first. That single difference means two identical points tables can produce two different final standings depending on which country you're in.

Most people assume goal difference is football's universal tiebreaker. It isn't, and the exception affects two of Europe's five biggest leagues.

The short answer

LeagueAfter points, the tie is broken by
Premier LeagueGoal difference, then goals scored
LaLigaHead-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference, then overall goal difference
Serie AHead-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference, then overall goal difference, then goals scored
BundesligaGoal difference, then goals scored
Ligue 1Goal difference, then goals scored

Three leagues out of five lead with goal difference. Two lead with head-to-head. That's the whole story, and it's the bit that trips up anyone building a table calculator or writing rules for a prediction league.

Why it matters: a worked example

Imagine two clubs finish level on 78 points.

  • Club A: goal difference +40. Lost 1-0 away to Club B, won 1-0 at home. Head-to-head: one win each, level on goals.
  • Club B: goal difference +25. Same head-to-head record.

In the Premier League, Club A finishes above Club B. Goal difference is the first tiebreaker, +40 beats +25, and the head-to-head record is irrelevant.

Now change the head-to-head. Say Club B won 3-0 at home and lost 1-0 away - so Club B took four points off Club A to Club A's three, with a better head-to-head goal difference.

In LaLiga or Serie A, Club B now finishes above Club A, despite a goal difference fifteen goals worse. The two clubs' results against each other outrank everything they did against the other eighteen.

Same points, same results, two different champions - decided entirely by which country the league is in.

The leagues that use goal difference first

Premier League

Points, then goal difference, then goals scored. Head-to-head record does not decide Premier League positions at all. If clubs are still inseparable and the placing decides the title, relegation or European qualification, the league provides for a play-off - which has never actually been needed.

Bundesliga

Points, then goal difference, then goals scored. Head-to-head only enters the picture after those, followed by head-to-head goals scored and away goals. Note the season shape too: the Bundesliga runs eighteen clubs over 34 matchdays, not twenty over 38.

Ligue 1

Points, then goal difference, then a sequence of head-to-head criteria, then goals scored. Like the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 runs eighteen clubs and 34 matchdays - it cut from twenty in 2023-24, which a surprising number of tie-break guides still haven't caught up with.

The leagues that use head-to-head first

LaLiga

Points, then the head-to-head record between the tied clubs: first the points they took off each other, then the goal difference in those matches, and only then overall goal difference.

This is not a technicality that never comes up. It's decided titles - most famously in 2006-07, when Real Madrid and Barcelona finished level on 76 points and Madrid took the title on their head-to-head record despite Barcelona having the better goal difference.

Serie A

Points, then head-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference, then overall goal difference, then goals scored.

Serie A also has the most distinctive mechanism of the five: the classifica avulsa. When three or more clubs finish level on points, Italy doesn't compare them pairwise - it builds a mini-table containing only the matches those clubs played against each other, and ranks them on their record inside that mini-table. A club can have the best overall goal difference of the three and still finish bottom of the group.

And since 2022-23 there's one more twist: if two clubs finish level on points at the very top, the Scudetto is decided by a one-off play-off match, not by any of the above.

What this means for table predictors

Here's the practical consequence, and it's the reason this article exists.

Almost every table predictor and league calculator - including ours - works from each club's aggregate record: wins, draws, losses, goals for, goals against. From those numbers you can compute points and goal difference exactly. What you cannot compute is who beat whom, because the aggregate doesn't record it.

So for the Premier League, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, a points-then-goal-difference sort matches the real table exactly.

For LaLiga and Serie A, it can't. Points are still right, so the title race, the European places and the relegation zone are all correct - but the order of two clubs sitting on identical points may differ from the official standings.

We'd rather say that out loud than show you a number that looks authoritative and isn't. If a table calculator doesn't mention this, it's making the same simplification without telling you.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Premier League use head-to-head?

No. Premier League positions are decided on points, then goal difference, then goals scored. Head-to-head record does not come into it.

Does LaLiga use goal difference?

Yes, but not first. LaLiga looks at the head-to-head record between the tied clubs before it considers overall goal difference.

What is the classifica avulsa?

It's the mini-table Serie A uses when three or more clubs are level on points. Only the matches between those clubs count, and they're ranked on the points and goal difference from that group of fixtures alone.

Which leagues play 34 games instead of 38?

The Bundesliga and Ligue 1, because both run eighteen clubs rather than twenty. The Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A all play 38.

Can a club with a worse goal difference finish higher?

Yes - in LaLiga and Serie A, if it has the better head-to-head record against the club it's level with. In the Premier League, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, it cannot.
