Every club plays 34 games - all 17 rivals home and away. A win is three points, a draw is one, a defeat is nothing. Level on points and the Ligue 1 separates clubs on goal difference, then goals scored.
What each position is worth
- 1st - champions of France.
- Top 3 - Champions League league phase.
- 4th - enters a Champions League qualifying round rather than going straight through - France's allocation is smaller than Spain's or England's, and it moves with UEFA coefficients.
- 5th and 6th - have recently carried Europa League and Conference League places, shifting with the Coupe de France winner.
- 16th - plays a relegation play-off against a Ligue 2 side.
- 17th and 18th - relegated to Ligue 2 automatically.
