NFL playoff bracket rules
An NFL playoff bracket pool is the January version of the office bracket: before Wild Card weekend, everyone calls the whole postseason - every game, all the way to the Super Bowl - and then spends a month finding out how wrong they were.
How the NFL playoff bracket works
Fourteen teams make the playoffs, seven from each conference. The four division winners are seeded 1 through 4, the three wild cards are seeded 5 through 7:
- Wild Card round - six games across one weekend. The 2 seed hosts the 7, the 3 hosts the 6, the 4 hosts the 5. Only the 1 seed in each conference gets a bye, and they sit the round out at home.
- Divisional round - four games. The bye teams enter here.
- Conference Championships - two games, one per conference, for a trip to the Super Bowl.
- Super Bowl - one game on neutral ground. Winner takes the trophy.
That's 13 games to call in total.
The re-seeding rule that breaks most brackets
Here's the part people get wrong every year: the NFL re-seeds after every round. The bracket does not run on fixed lines like March Madness. In the Divisional round the top remaining seed plays the lowest remaining seed - so who you face depends on who else won, not on where you sat on the page.
Practically, that means one upset can redraw half the conference. If the 7 seed knocks off the 2, the 1 seed inherits them and a softer path opens for everyone else. Pick the Wild Card round carefully; it decides the shape of everything after it.
Scoring your bracket
- Flat scoring. One point per correct game. Simple, fast, and fine for a casual group.
- Round weighting. Later rounds are worth more - Wild Card 1, Divisional 2, Conference 4, Super Bowl 8 - so a rough opening weekend doesn't end your January.
- Bonus calls. Add points for nailing the exact Super Bowl matchup, the champion, or the final margin.
- Locks at kickoff. Brackets lock at the first Wild Card kickoff. No editing once the postseason is live.

Everyone fills out the same bracket: chalk through the Divisional round, then a coin-flip Super Bowl. That bracket ties for fourth. Here's what actually separates a winning entry from the pile.
Weight your risk to the scoring
Read the scoring sheet before you pick a single game. Under flat scoring, the Wild Card round is 6 of the 13 games - nearly half the board - so accuracy early is worth more than a bold Super Bowl call. Under round weighting, the opposite is true: the Super Bowl alone can be worth eight Wild Card games, and picking a champion nobody else has is the whole strategy. Same bracket, opposite optimal play.
One upset, and put it in the right round
Home teams win roughly two out of three playoff games, so a bracket full of upsets is a bracket that busts on Saturday. But the 5-and-6 seeds win often enough that a chalk bracket doesn't win a big pool either. The move is one deliberate upset in the Wild Card round, on the matchup where the seeding lies - a 6 seed that finished hot against a 3 seed that backed into a weak division.
Don't advance a team you don't believe in
The most expensive mistake in bracket pools is a compounding one: you pick a team in the Wild Card round because they're the safer call, then have to keep advancing them because they're on your line. If you don't think a team can win two road games, don't put them in the Conference Championship - take the loss in round one instead of carrying a dead pick for three rounds.
Pick the Super Bowl first, then work backwards
Decide which two teams you actually think will be standing in February, then fill in the path that gets them there. It sounds backwards; it stops you from producing a bracket where your champion has to beat three teams you also rated higher than them.
Know what the crowd is doing
In a pool of more than about twenty people, you're not trying to be right - you're trying to be right differently. If the 1 seed is on 80% of brackets, picking them wins you nothing when they hold. The differentiated pick only has to be plausible, not likely.
