How a round robin works

A round robin is a tournament where every team or player plays every other one. No knockout, no early exit. The table decides who wins, so one bad day does not end your season.

The formula

n(n-1)/2 games

n is the number of teams. Each of the n teams plays n-1 opponents, and every game is counted by two teams, so you divide by 2.

  • Even number of teams: n-1 rounds, with n/2 games in each. Everyone plays every round.
  • Odd number of teams: n rounds, with (n-1)/2 games in each. One team sits out each round (a BYE), and everyone gets exactly one.

The generator uses the circle method. One team stays fixed, the rest rotate around it one place per round, and the pairs are read off opposite each other. After the last rotation every pair has met once. Odd count? A placeholder BYE joins the circle and whoever draws it has the round off.

How many games and rounds?

Odd counts are marked BYE: the games per round is (n-1)/2 and one team sits out each round.

Single vs double round robin

Single

Everyone plays everyone once: n(n-1)/2 games. Best when time is short, or you have a lot of teams. Home and away cannot be perfectly even for everyone, so the generator keeps the gap as small as it can.

Double

Everyone plays everyone twice, with home and away swapped in the second leg: n(n-1) games. Fairer, since a lucky draw or a bad day matters less, and every team gets equal home and away games.

Round robin vs bracket

A round robin guarantees every team the same number of games, so the table is the fairest ranking you can get. The cost is volume: 16 teams need 120 games, where a single-elimination bracket needs 15.

A bracket is fast and dramatic. Lose and you are out, so you only need one winner per game. It is harsher on the team that has one bad afternoon. If you are short on time or courts, a bracket is the better fit. Need one? Try the bracket generator.

Many events combine them: a round robin in groups, then a bracket for the top teams. Run the groups here, then take the qualifiers to the bracket.

FAQ

How many games are in a round robin?+

A single round robin has n(n-1)/2 games, where n is the number of teams or players. Four teams play 6 games, eight teams play 28, and sixteen teams play 120. A double round robin doubles that to n(n-1).

How many rounds does a round robin have?+

With an even number of teams there are n-1 rounds, and everyone plays in every round. With an odd number there are n rounds, because one team sits out each round. A double round robin has twice as many rounds.

What is a BYE and why does it appear?+

A BYE is a round off. If you enter an odd number of teams, someone has to be left without an opponent each round. The generator adds a placeholder BYE entry and shows who sits out in each round. Everyone gets exactly one BYE per leg.

What is the circle method?+

It is the standard way to schedule a round robin. One team stays fixed, the others sit around a circle, and each round everyone is paired with the team opposite. Then the circle rotates one place. After n-1 rotations every pair has met exactly once.

Is home and away balanced?+

As evenly as possible. In a double round robin every team gets exactly as many home games as away games, because the second leg swaps them. In a single round robin, an even field has an odd number of games per team, so a gap of one is the best any schedule can do.

How does the standings table break ties?+

Teams are ranked on points first. Tied teams are then split by head-to-head: points, then score difference, then score in the games they played each other. After that comes overall score difference, overall score, and finally name. Points are 3/1/0 or 2/1/0, your choice.

Can I use it for courts, fields or boards?+

Yes. Set how many you have and each round is split into simultaneous slots. With 8 teams and 2 courts, a round of 4 games becomes 2 slots of 2 games. Add a start time and minutes per slot and each slot gets a clock time.

Is my data saved or sent anywhere?+

Everything runs in your browser. Your list, options and scores are saved in this browser's local storage so they survive a refresh, and nothing is sent to a server. The share link carries the schedule and scores inside the link itself.

Can I turn my round robin into a Trofeo.live pool?+

Trofeo.live pools are free up to 10 players, players never pay, and there is no app, just one link. If you want a hosted pool built around your own league or event, request a custom tournament and tell us what you are running.

Is the round robin generator free?+

Yes. It is free, needs no login, and has no limit on how many schedules you make.
