An NFL confidence pool is a weekly pick'em with a twist: you pick every game's winner and rank each pick by how confident you are (16 down to 1). Correct picks score their assigned points, so the player who's both right and bold tops the leaderboard.
How it works

Go through the week's full slate and choose a winner in every game - straight up, no spreads, no scores.
Rank your conviction
Assign each pick a confidence value, from the number of games down to 1, using each value exactly once. Your surest call gets the biggest number.
Score and total up
Every correct pick banks the value you put on it; every miss scores zero. Add up the week, carry it across the season, highest total wins.
How confidence scoring works
A confidence pool turns weekly winner-picking into a strategy game. You don't just pick who wins - you rank how sure you are. Each correct pick is worth the confidence points you assigned it, so the season comes down to spreading your conviction wisely.
How scoring works
- Assign a confidence value to every game. With 16 games in a week, your most-confident pick is worth 16 points, your least-confident 1 point.
- Use each value once per week. You rank the full slate from 16 down to 1 - no repeats. Spread them right and a single upset barely dents you; pile points on the wrong "lock" and your week is toast.
- Points only count on correct picks. Pick the winner and you bank the confidence value you put on it. Miss, and that value scores zero.
- Highest total wins. Track it weekly, season-long, or both. The cumulative leaderboard is the real bragging-rights chase.
Common options
- Weekly + season standings. Crown a weekly winner and run a season-long total - keeps everyone in it even after a rough Sunday.
- Variable slates. Bye weeks shrink the schedule - the top confidence value just matches the number of games that week, so a 14-game week is ranked 14 down to 1.
- Pick deadlines. Most pools lock each pick at its own kickoff, so a Sunday game stays editable after Thursday night. Locking the whole slate at the week's first kickoff is the stricter alternative.
- Missed picks. Agree up front what a missed week costs: zero for the week is the common call, and some pools assign the lowest available values instead.
Tiebreakers
Confidence scoring is its own tiebreaker most weeks - two players rarely land on the same total when every pick carries a different weight. If they do, they share the position, so agree the decider with your group up front.
Confidence pool strategy
Everyone picks roughly the same winners. Confidence pools are won and lost on where you put the numbers, and that's a different skill from picking games.
Rank by certainty, not by who you like
The only question that matters for each game is how likely is this result. A mediocre team hosting a worse one can be a safer bet than a great team on the road in a division game. Sort the slate by how sure you are, then attach the numbers - don't attach the numbers first and rationalise backwards.
Spend your top numbers on boredom
Your 16, 15 and 14 should go on the least interesting games on the board: big home favourites against bad teams. It feels like a waste of your best ammunition. It isn't - those three picks are most of your week's score, and the whole point is that they're dull enough to be safe.
Put your 1s where you're guessing
Every week has three or four games that are genuinely coin flips. Those get your lowest values, so being wrong costs you almost nothing. Players who fight this - who put an 11 on a game they can't call because they "have a feeling" - are the ones who post a 60-point week.
Don't chase a bad week
One rough Sunday does not need fixing with a wild 16-pointer next week. Season standings reward consistency, because the field's scores cluster: a steady player who banks their favourites every week beats the one who alternates between brilliant and catastrophic. Variance is the enemy when you're ahead and your only friend when you're a long way behind - know which one you are.
Go contrarian only when you're behind
If you're leading the season, rank like everyone else and let the standings hold. If you're chasing with three weeks left, you need the leaders to be wrong: find the game where the consensus is loading up on a favourite you don't trust, take the underdog, and give it a number big enough to matter. That's the swing that closes a gap.
Agree the ties and the misses before Week 1
Two players rarely land on the same total when every pick carries a different weight - but it happens, and a pool with no agreed decider ends in an argument. Same for missed weeks: decide whether they score zero or take the lowest available values before someone forgets.

How do you score a confidence pool?+
Each correct pick scores the confidence value assigned to it and each miss scores zero, so a week's total is the sum of the values on your correct picks. With 16 games a perfect week is 136 points (16+15+...+1). Most pools track a weekly winner and a running season total from the same picks.
Is a confidence pool the same as a pick'em pool?+
It's a pick'em with weighting. In a standard pick'em every correct pick is worth one point, so volume wins. In a confidence pool you rank your picks and score the value you assigned, so being right about the games you were sure of matters more than being right about the most games.
