The NBA playoffs bracket is a fixed tree of four best-of-seven rounds. Sixteen teams enter, eight from the East and eight from the West. The winners of each conference meet in the NBA Finals, and the Finals winner is the champion.

The NBA playoffs bracket in one minute

Here is the whole thing in a table.

RoundPlain-English nameFormat
1First roundBest-of-seven, 8 series total
2Conference semifinalsBest-of-seven, 4 series total
3Conference finalsBest-of-seven, 2 series total
4NBA FinalsBest-of-seven, 1 series

That's it. Win four games to win a series. Win four series to win the title.

Before the first round, a play-in tournament settles the last two spots in each conference. More on that next. Formats can change, so check nba.com for the current season's details.

How the bracket is built: play-in, seeds and rounds

A few terms first, in plain language:

  • Seed: a team's ranking within its conference, based on the regular season. Seed 1 is the best record.
  • Series: a set of games between two teams. The first to four wins moves on.
  • Bracket: the chart that shows who plays whom, and who meets the winner of which series.

The play-in

In each conference, seeds 1 to 6 go straight into the playoffs. Seeds 7 to 10 play the play-in tournament for the last two spots.

  • The 7th and 8th seeds play each other. The winner takes the 7 seed.
  • The 9th and 10th seeds play each other. The loser is out.
  • The loser of the 7 vs 8 game plays the winner of the 9 vs 10 game. The winner takes the 8 seed.

So each conference ends up with eight playoff teams, and the bracket is complete.

A fixed bracket, no reseeding

The first-round matchups are 1 vs 8, 4 vs 5, 3 vs 6 and 2 vs 7. After that, the NBA does not reseed between rounds. The bracket stays fixed.

That matters. If a top seed loses early, the team that beats it keeps moving along the same path. One upset changes the road for every team above it in the bracket.

The round names stay the same every year: first round, conference semifinals, conference finals, NBA Finals.

How to fill out your NBA playoff bracket

The method is simple.

  1. Start with the first round. Pick the winner of each of the eight series.
  2. Move your winners forward into the conference semifinals. Pick again.
  3. Keep going through the conference finals.
  4. Pick your champion from the Finals matchup you built.
  5. If your group wants a tiebreaker, add the number of games you think a series will last.

One warning. Late rounds depend on early picks. If you picked a team to reach the conference finals and it loses in round one, that pick is dead, and every later pick built on it goes with it. That's why a busted first-round call hurts so much.

The free printable NBA playoff bracket works for this. Print it, fill it in, stick it on the fridge. No login needed.

Printable bracket vs a live pool

Both work. They do different jobs.

A printed bracket is fine for the fridge. But someone has to score it by hand, and someone has to settle the disputes.

In a Trofeo.live pool, picks are auto-graded and the leaderboard updates live. Predictions are public, so nobody can quietly rewrite history. A kickoff lock applies once the action starts.

How to run an NBA playoff bracket pool with friends or coworkers

Trofeo.live is the free sports prediction game for friends and coworkers: create a pool, predict winners and scores, and watch the live leaderboard decide who gets bragging rights.

Bracket pool or pick'em?

Two formats suit basketball playoffs. Both run as hosted pools on Trofeo.live.

  • Bracket pool: brackets run as hosted pools on Trofeo.live. Predictions are submitted before the action starts and are public, with a kickoff lock.
  • Pick'em: a pool where you pick the winner of each game, game by game, instead of filling out a whole chart.

If the second one sounds like your group, see the free NBA pick'em pool.

Create a pool. Then:

  1. Share one link with your group.

  • Bigger pools are a one-time payment per pool.
  • There is no subscription and no auto-renewal.
  • Players never pay. The organizer covers the pool.
  • Checkout is via Stripe.

Bragging rights, not betting

Trofeo.live is about bragging rights, not betting. Trofeo.live doesn't handle money. The prize is the right to gloat in the group chat.

Tips for a fair, fun bracket pool

  • Set the deadline before the first tip-off. The kickoff lock applies once the action starts, so nobody picks with hindsight.
  • Decide the tiebreaker up front. For example, total games in the Finals. Agree on it before picks open, not after the leaderboard ties.
  • Keep group size in mind. A coworker group of 20 or more needs a paid tier. It's a one-time payment, and players still pay nothing.
  • Get ready for March Madness. The college tournament is the biggest bracket of the year. Set up a March Madness pool with the same group, and print a March Madness bracket from the free tools too. Free tools need no login.
  • Run more than one sport. Here's how the MLB playoff bracket works for readers who run pools across sports.

FAQ
